Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension happens when the pressure of one's blood vessels reaches a dangerous level (140/90 mmHG or higher). A blood pressure reading is translated as the systolic blood pressure (first number - represented by the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats) over the diastolic blood pressure (second number - the pressure in your arteries when your heart is at rest between beats).
High blood pressure can be common in many individuals but can become serious if left untreated. In fact, many with hypertension may not feel direct symptoms. Regular checkups and visits with your doctor are advised every 2 years after the age of 21. If hypertension is common in your family’s health history, more frequent checks may be needed. Untreated hypertension puts individuals at risk for increased rates of heart attack, stroke, and other serious complications. For some, lifestyle changes - such as quitting smoking, improved diet, and exercise can help dramatically. For others, medication may be prescribed.
